Preparing your pool for extreme weather

08 December 2023

In the event of bad weather, heavy winds and rains, like a storm or cyclone, how can you protect your pool?

Clear the deck: Remove anything that could be knocked over by the wind from around your pool, such as furniture, sun umbrellas, and potted plants.

Remove loose items: As bad weather approaches, small objects like toys, inflatable beds, floaties, and other items should also be taken out of the pool to prevent them from blowing away and becoming projectiles.

Disconnect and store equipment: If you have invested in an expensive pool robot or another cleaner, it is a good idea to remove them from the pool and store them. Pool robots normally have an AC controller and a low-voltage supply to the robot itself. However remote the chances, this makes for potential circuitry damage in the event of a lightning strike.

Protect any electrical equipment: Water might enter through cracks or around unsealed switches or other electrical equipment if you fail to protect it: Most electrical equipment, including chlorinators, switches and other electrical gear is weatherproof, but extreme weather might allow water to enter through cracks. A tarp or other weatherproofing might be useful if you are concerned about your electrical devices.

Cover the pool: Maybe it is time to think about getting a pool cover. In the event of bad weather, your pool will be more protected from leaves and debris. Pool covers make a great investment as they have many benefits throughout the year and will save you money in the long run.

Balance the water chemistry: After the event, make sure that the pH and chlorine levels in the water are within the recommended range to protect the pools. Keep in mind we aren't just dealing with rain from the sky but also runoff from your roof, patio, landscaping, etc. which can also carry a wide variety of contaminants that will affect your water chemistry in many different ways.

Remember to follow local weather alerts and take appropriate safety precautions during bad weather events.
